Khao Kai Nui’s Sea of Mist at Baan Thung Maprao

When one thinks of the sea, an image of the vast, blue ocean usually comes to mind. But for today, we will take our readers on a tour to the misty mountains where the air is crisp and cool. High up on Khao Kai Nui is where the villagers come to experience the beautiful sea of mist of Baan Tung Maprao’s Amphur Thai Muang, Phang-Nga.

ทะเลแสนสวยสีสันสดใส หลายคนอาจคิดถึงท้องน้ำที่กว้างใหญ่ไพศาล ขอตอบว่าไม่ใช่ค่ะ วันนี้เราจะพาเพื่อนๆไปรับลมหนาวอากาศเย็นสบายท่ามกลางขุนเขาและแมกไม้บนเขาไข่นุ้ย ที่ชาวบ้านเรียกขานกันว่าทะเลหมอกแห่งบ้านทุ่งมะพร้าว อ.ท้ายเหมือง เมืองพังงา

We set off on our journey before the break of dawn in order to get there in time to see Khao Kai Nui’s sea of mist. Upon arrival, we contacted Mr. Joe, secretary to Tung Maprao’s head of local administration organization, transferred onto the four-wheel truck and preceded up the mountain.

เราเตรียมตัวออกเดินทางตั้งแต่เช้ามืดเพื่อไปยังขุนเขาแห่งสายหมอก ณ เขาไข่นุ้ย ก่อนพระอาทิตย์จะขึ้น  เมื่อมาถึงเราติดต่อน้องโจ เลขานายก อบต.ทุ่งมะพร้าว เปลี่ยนรถเป็นกระบะโฟว์วีล เพื่อลุยต่อ ขึ้นยอดเขากัน

The 3-kilometer path was hilly, narrow and filled with potholes but we didn’t mind as both sides of the road were lined with lush flora and fauna. The buzzing sounds of insects were like music that played as we ventured along the mesmerizing greenery of Khao Kai Nui.

เส้นทางแคบ สูงชัน แถมขรุขระ ทั้งขึ้นเขาลงเขาตลอด 3  กิโล แต่ที่สุดยอดคงเป็นสองข้างทางที่เต็มไปด้วยต้นไม้หลากหลายสายพันธุ์ เสียงแซ่ดแซร่ของเหล่าแมลงและนกนานาชนิด ยิ่งทำให้พวกเราสดชื่นท่ามกลางป่าเขา ชักหลงรักเขาไข่นุ้ยเข้าแล้วสิ

Further and further up we went until we reached the end of the path. There, we trekked on foot for another 300-500 meters to get to the top of Khao Kai Nui. The mist that surrounded us in every direction was absolutely beautiful.

เรานั่งรถขึ้นเขาเรื่อยๆจนสุดทาง แล้วต้องเดินเท้าต่อไปอีก ประมาณ300-500 เมตร ก็มาถึงยอดเขาไข่นุ้ย ได้สัมผัสกับม่านหมอกที่รายล้อมไปทั่วทุกทิศทุกทาง

What lie ahead was a dream-like vision of white mist gently flowing to the rhythm of the breeze, covering the hill-top overgrown with plants and trees. The coolness that enveloped the entire area like in the northern hills made us fall in love with Khao Kai Nui even more.

ภาพที่ปรากฏแทบไม่อยากเชื่อสายตาตัวเอง เมื่อหมอกสีขาวกระจ่าง ยังกับปุยฝ้ายลอยละลิ่วปลิวละล่องตามกระแสลม โผล่พ้นขึ้นมาปกคลุมหุบเขาที่เต็มไปด้วยต้นไม้น้อยใหญ่สีเขียวขจี  เห็นแล้วตื่นตาตื่นใจยิ่งนัก แถมบรรยากาศยังเย็นสบายเหมือนได้สัมผัสกลิ่นไอของเมืองเหนือ แล้วแบบนี้จะไม่ให้เราหลงรักเขาไข่นุ้ยได้อย่างไร

The first ray of sun began to appear, shining like glitter onto the web of mist. We all were excited at this magical scenery created by Mother Nature who ever so tirelessly paints her artwork.

พระอาทิตย์เริ่มทอแสงเปล่งประกายระยิบระยับกระทบลงมายังม่านหมอกทำให้พวกเราตื่นเต้นไปกับความสวยงามที่เป็นเหมือนความมหัศจรรย์ที่ธรรมชาติบรรจงสร้างและแต่งแต้มสีสันอวดพวกเรา อย่างไม่รู้จักเหน็ดเหนื่อย

It was fortunate that we got to experience the sea of mist and big, mellow sun before those down below and hope that you, too, will get to see it one day.

เราถือว่าวันนี้เป็นวันโชคดี ที่ได้เห็นทะเลหมอกสวยๆ และใกล้ชิดกับดวงอาทิตย์ดวงโต ก่อนเพื่อนๆที่อยู่บนพื้นราบ อยากให้ทุกคนมาเห็นและมาสัมผัสกันจังเลย

As legend goes, Khao Kai Nui was named after two men, Mr. Kai and Mr. Nui, hence the name Kai Nui Mountain.

Competing forthe Title “Master of the Andaman Sea” The Traditional Long Boat Race of Panyi Island

Come join the fun at “the 5^th Traditional Long Boat Race of Panyi Island” held during the 18^th -21^st of March, 2013. The winner of the competition was honored with the coveted trophy by HRH Princess MahaChakriSirindhorn.

บึดจ้ำบึ๊ด ศึกเรือยาว ชิงเจ้าแห่งน่านน้ำอันดามันประเพณีแข่งขันเรือยาวเกาะปันหยี

เชียร์กันมันส์ๆสนั่นน่านน้ำกับ “ประเพณีแข่งขันเรือยาวเกาะปันหยี ครั้งที่ 5” ระหว่างวันที่ 18 – 21 มีนาคม 2556  ชิงถ้วยพระราชทานสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯสยามบรมราชกุมารี

For this year’s race, some of the best rowers have competed for the trophy, with opening ceremony taking place at the Phangnga Provincial Administrative Organization Port. Among some of the esteemed witnesses and fans, there were the Mayor of Phangnga, local management staffs and local residents who were all there to cheer for their favorite teams.

ในปีนี้มีฝีพายเข้าร่วมแข่งขันมากมายเพื่อชิงชัยความเป็น 1 ในน่านน้ำทะเลอันดามัน  โดยมีผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดพังงา  ผู้บริหารส่วนท้องถิ่น และประชาชนในพื้นที่เข้าร่วมพิธีเปิดอย่างล้นหลาม ณบริเวณลำน้ำท่าเทียบเรือองค์การบริหารส่วนจังหวัดพังงา

There were 2 categories: 1) Large Long Boats with a maximum of 32 rowers (5 teams) and 2) Small Long Boats with a maximum of 20 rowers(18 teams). With so many teams to choose from, it was hard to decide on a favorite so may the best team win.

การแข่งขันแบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท ได้แก่ ประเภทเรือยาวใหญ่ ไม่เกิน 32 ฝีพายมีผู้เข้าแข่งขัน จำนวน 5 ทีม  และเรือยาวเล็ก ไม่เกิน 20 ฝีพายอีก จำนวน 18 ทีม เยอะจนเลือกไม่ถูกเลยค่ะ ว่าจะเชียร์ทีมไหนดี สงสัยต้องขอดูฝีไม้ลายมือของแต่ละทีมก่อนการตัดสินใจซะแล้ว

As for the spectators, everyone was cheering as loud as they could especially when the boast came neck and neck.

ฟากกองเชียร์ข้างสนามก็สร้างสีสันอยู่ไม่น้อย ต่างส่งเสียงเชียร์ ส่งกำลังใจไปถึงขอบเรือ โดยเฉพาะตอนแซงนี่ซิยิ่งมันส์ เสียงเชียร์กึกก้องดังสนั่น ลุ้นจนนั่งไม่ลงกันเลยทีเดียว

The icing on top had to be the commentator who was the most excited of all. We could understand only half of what he said but all we know was that he made the whole thing very colorful indeed.

เหนือกองเชียร์ ก็ยังมีโฆษกที่พากย์ได้อย่างดุเดือนเผ็ดมันส์ แม้จะฟังออกบ้าง ไม่ออกบ้าง แต่พูดได้คำเดียวเลยว่าคนพากย์นี่แหละเป็นหัวใจสำคัญของงานแข่งเรือ ถ้าขาดไปงานกร่อยแน่ค่ะ

Apart from the highlight of the event, there were also minor local race categories including the small paddle boat, the 5-man boat, the canoe and more.

นอกจากการแข่งเรือยาวที่เป็นไฮไลท์สำคัญแล้ว ยังมีการแข่งขันเรือกีฬาพื้นบ้านต่างๆอีกด้วย  อาทิ เรือแจว, เรือ 5  ฝีพาย,   เรือแคนู,  หรือเรือหัวใช้ท้ายบอด  เป็นต้น

Let’s Free the Tiny Turtles Back into the Sea

Thai Muang Beach of Phang-Nga is the kind of place where nature is preserved to its fullest. The area’s large and small trees that grow wild provide shade and habitat for the residential animals and the long, soft beach which stretches for kilometers is also the area where sea turtles come to lay their eggs.

หาดท้ายเหมือง เมืองพังงายังคงความอุดมสมบรูณ์ของธรรมชาติ ทั้งต้นไม้น้อยใหญ่ให้ร่มเงาและเป็นแหล่งพักพิงของสัตว์นานาชนิดรวมทั้งชายหาดที่ทอดยาวหลายกิโลทำให้เป็นที่ต้องตาต้องใจของบรรดาเต่าตัวแม่ให้มาวางไข่บนชายหาด

Held annually in March, the Sea Turtle Conservation Festival features colorful parades and exhibitions of marine species including various fishes, crocodiles, rare giant clams and a variety of sea turtle species. The highlight of the festival, naturally, is freeing young turtles into the sea.

งานประเพณีอนุรักษ์เต่าทะเล จัดช่วงเดือนมีนาคมของทุกปี โดยมีขบวนพาเหรดสวยงาม และการจัดนิทรรศการโชว์สัตว์น้ำนานาชนิดตั้งแต่ปลาทะเลตัวเล็กตัวน้อย มีจระเข้ หอยมือเสือหลากหลายสีขนาดใหญ่หายากมากๆมาอวดโฉม พร้อมด้วยเต่าหลากหลายสายพันธุ์ว่ายไปมาให้เพลิดเพลินใจที่สำคัญสุดๆคือการได้ทำกิจกรรมปล่อยเต่าน้อยลงทะเล

We stopped to enquire at the Phangnga Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center how we could contribute to freeing the turtles like the many visitors who have come to do this good deed. We also learned that for this year, the center will nurse the young turtles until they reach their eighth month before letting them into the open sea where they will be strong enough to fend for themselves.

เราแวะมาที่โต๊ะประชาสัมพันธ์ของศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาประมงชายฝั่งพังงา เพื่อสอบถามว่าเราต้องทำอย่างไรถึงจะได้เต่าไปปล่อย เพราะเห็นหลายคนอุ้มน้องเต่า แสดงความเป็นเจ้าของอย่างภาคภูมิใจ.. แล้วเราก็ได้ข้อมูลมาว่าปีนี้ทางศูนย์ได้อนุบาลเต่าจนอายุถึงแปดเดือน เพื่อให้เต่าแข็งแรงและสามารถช่วยเหลือตัวเองได้ในโลกกว้าง จึงค่อยนำมาปล่อย ทำให้เต่ามีโอกาสรอดในการดำรงชีวิตสูง แน่นอนว่าเราก็อยากสนับสนุนและเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของกิจกรรมดีดีที่เกิดขึ้น

Thais believe that freeing turtles symbolizes longevity, so the good deed is done not only for the benefit of the turtles but also the person or their loved ones. So, we each sought out our very own young, micro-chipped turtles to be freed into the sea.

คนไทยมีความเชื่อในเรื่องของการปล่อยเต่าหากเราต้องการมีอายุที่ยืนยาวให้นำเต่าไปปล่อยเพื่อต่อชีวิตให้ตัวเราเองและญาติมิตรที่รัก แน่นอนที่สุดมาถึงหน้างานขนาดนี้แล้วเรารีบจับจองเต่าตัวน้อยที่ติดตั้งไมโครชิฟเพื่อแสดงตัวตนของเต่าโดยมีเราเป็นเจ้าของ  และยังช่วยอนุรักษ์เต่าให้อยู่ในท้องทะเลตลอดไป

The embedded microchips keep track of the turtles’ well-being, which is reported to the freer by the center. When found, we will know whether they are alive, dead, injured and even the condition of their living environment.

เมื่อมีการพบเห็นเต่าของเราไม่ว่าจะเป็นหรือตายทางศูนย์วิจัยและพัฒนาประมงชายฝั่งจะส่งข้อมูลมาให้ เพื่อให้เราได้ทราบความเคลื่อนไหวของเต่า และยังเป็นการได้ศึกษาเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับเต่าและความอุดมสมบรูณ์ใต้ท้องทะเล แค่ได้ฟังก็ตัดสินใจเป็นเจ้าของเต่าไปเรียบร้อยแล้วค่ะ

We started to free the turtles late in the afternoon when the temperature has cooled down a bit. Each of the turtle’s owners would show their documents before collecting their precious little creature and head off to the beach. The shoreline is filled with conservationists all beaming and cheering with joy as they sent off their young life into the world. With a backdrop of fishing boats and mellow sun waiting to set into the ocean, the atmosphere was one of true happiness and hope.

We felt so grateful to have been a part of this inspiring festival held at Thai Muang Beach. The love and hope for the turtles can be felt by all participants both from Thailand and those who have come from many different parts of the world. This is only a small event of Phangnga but it certainly is one of the warmest in many people’s hearts.

Enjoy a stroll through Tham Ruhsi Sawan (Heavenly Hermit Cave) in the Heart of Phang-Nga

Beautiful caves and Phang-Nga are synonymous with each other because the province is literally filled with fascinating limestone caves hidden beneath the towering mountain range. The interiors are like art studios displaying a multitude of intriguing limestone formations shaped over centuries.

“ถ้ำงามตา” หนึ่งในคำขวัญจังหวัดพังงา สะท้อนให้เห็นว่า … เมืองพังงาบริบูรณ์ไปด้วยภูเขาหินปูน ที่กาลเวลาและธรรมชาติต่างช่วยกันสร้างสรรค์ให้เกิดถ้ำที่สวยงาม ภายใต้หินผาสูงใหญ่ให้คนรุ่งหลังได้ชื่นชม

Today, we shall visit one such place called the Heavenly Hermit Cave conveniently located right in the heart of Phang-Nga town. Getting there is easy as it is located within the grounds of HRH Princess Srinakarindra Park, a great place for jogging and picnics.

เกริ่นมาซะขนาดนี้ รู้แล้วใช่มั๊ยค่ะว่าวันนี้เราจะพาเพื่อนๆไปชมถ้ำกันค่ะ ถ้ำที่ว่านี้ อยู่ในตัวเมืองพังงา ก็คือ ถ้ำฤาษีสวรรค์นั่นเองค่ะ การเดินทางก็ค่อนข้างสะดวก ตั้งอยู่ในสวนสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทร์ สถานที่ให้ผู้คนมาวิ่งออกกำลังกาย และพักผ่อนหย่อนใจ

In front of the cave is a statue of the hermit where visitors come to pay their respects. This area is also great for chilling out, enjoying the view or feeding the herd of playful monkeys who live in the forest above.

บริเวณหน้าถ้ำมีรูปปั้นฤาษีประดิษฐานอยู่ ใครผ่านไปมามักแวะสักการบูชา  บางคนก็มานั่งเล่นกินลม ชมวิว บางคนใจบุญมาให้อาหารบรรดาลิงๆที่ลงมาหาอาหาร หรือมาหยอกล้อกันไปเล่นกันมาบริเวณรอบๆถ้ำ ดูแล้วทำให้เกิดรอยยิ้มบนใบหน้าได้เหมือนกันค่ะ

There are two openings in this cave which allow visitors to walk through. The air inside is well-ventilated and cool; and there is a small stream which reflects a kaleidoscope of gleaming rays on the walls when hit by sunlight.

ลักษณะถ้ำเป็นถ้ำลอด สามารถเดินทะลุถึงกันได้ บรรยากาศเย็นสบาย ภายในถ้ำมีธารน้ำ เวลาที่แสงอาทิตย์สาดส่องลงมาบนผืนน้ำแล้วสะท้อนกลับมายังผนังถ้ำ ขอบอกว่า….สวยงามจับตา จับใจยิ่งนัก

The intriguing limestone formations hanging from above are created by centuries of limestone build-up as water drips.

ภายในถ้ำยังมีหินงอกหินย้อย ให้เห็นอยู่บ้าง ซึ่งหินงอกหินย้อยเหล่านี้เกิดจากการหยดของน้ำที่เกิดจากหินปูนอย่างต่อเนื่องเป็นเวลานาน

There are also the royal sign-manuals of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, HRH Queen Rampaipannee (Queen of King Rama 7), HRH Princess Srinakarindra (the Princess Mother) and HRH Pricess Galyani Vadhana on the cave walls. The signs were imprinted during their royal visits to the cave.

นอกจากนี้ ภายในถ้ำยังมีรอยจารึกพระปรมาภิไธยของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลเดช, พระนามาภิไธยของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิตติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ, พระนามาภิไธยของสมเด็จพระนางเจ้ารำไพพรรณี พระบรมราชินีในรัชกาลที่ 7, พระนานามาภิไธยของสมเด็จพระศรีนครินทราบรมราชชนนี และพระนามาภิไธยของสมเด็จพระเจ้าพี่นางเธอ เจ้าฟ้ากัลยาณิวัฒนา กรมหลวงนราธิวาสราชนครินทร์ประดิษฐานอยู่บนผนังถ้ำ โดยจารึกไว้เมื่อครั้งเสด็จพระราชดำเนินมาจังหวัดพังงา และทรงแวะเยี่ยมถ้ำฤาษีสวรรค์

วันนี้เราจะพาเพื่อนๆมาชิมหมูสะเต๊ะร้านคุณทิพย์ที่ใครๆมาพังงาไม่ชิมสะเต๊ะคุณทิพย์เหมือนมาไม่ถึงค่ะ เรียกว่าเป็นจุดไฮไลท์ของจังหวัด กล้าท้าขนาดนี้แสดงว่ามีดีแน่ งั้นต้องไปท้าพิสูจน์กัน ว่าจะอร่อยล้ำขนาดไหน

As we approached the restaurant in Phang-Nga town, we caught a whiff of tantalizing aroma of meat sizzling on the grill. By that time, everyone was so hungry and everything looked so appetizing that we just ordered everything on the menu.

วิ่งมาปะทะกับต่อมความหิวทำเอาตาลาย เพราะร่างกายต้องการโปรตีนอย่างเร่งด่วน แน่นอนพวกเราสั่ง.. และสั่ง  ทุกอย่างที่ขวางหน้า เพราะเห็นแล้วน่าชิมไปทุกอย่าง

Taking our orders, the cooks busily loaded more skewered meat on the grill while greeting us and other clients with genuine friendliness. A short moment later, the famous yellowish, tender Satays were served.

หลังจากนั้นสะเต๊ะหลากหลายชนิดก็วางเรียงรายอยู่บนเตา เหล่ามือปิ้งสะเต๊ะก็สาละวนกับการย่าง ท่าทางน่าสนุก แต่ทุกคนไม่ลืมที่จะส่งยิ้มและกล่าวทักทายกับลูกค้าทั้งเก่าและใหม่อย่างจริงใจ..เมื่อก้าวย่างเข้ามาในร้าน  สะเต๊ะได้ที่กลายเป็นสีเหลืองนวลๆจึงพร้อมยกมาเสริฟ์ถึงโต๊ะ

Apart from pork, Khun Tip’s is also famous for their intestine and liver Satay which evidently nearly every table ordered. It must be the slight squishy texture of the grilled intestine plus the aroma of grilled liver marinated in herbs that made it so good. We also tried and loved it as much as the pork, chicken and shrimp Satays that followed.

มาร้านคุณทิพย์ต้องสั่งสะเต๊ะเครื่องในที่มีทั้งไส้อ่อนและตับในไม้เดียวกัน มองไปโต๊ะไหนก็ต้องสั่งเมนูนี้ เวลาเคี้ยวจะกรุบกรับของไส้อ่อน กลิ่นหอมของตับและเครื่องเทศที่ปรุงรสเฉพาะ ต้องยกนิ้วกดไลท์ให้เลยค่ะ หลังจากนั้นสะเต๊ะหมู สะเต๊ะไก่และสะเต๊ะกุ้งก็ทยอยออกจากเตามาเสริฟ์ให้เราได้ลิ้มลองความอร่อย

This was actually the first time any of us ever had shrimp Satay. Needless to say, it was superb beyond words. We also loved how they took local ingredients and mixed it with traditional marinades which no one has thought of before. The combination of Satay-grilled fresh shrimp dipped in Ajad sauce and grilled bread was absolutely divine.

ขอบอกตรงๆแบบไม่อายนะคะว่านี่เป็นครั้งแรกที่ได้ชิมสะเต๊ะกุ้ง รสชาดสุดยอดอร่อยขั้นเทพ ชอบตรงที่ทางร้านนำเอาวัตถุดิบที่มีอยู่ในท้องตลาดโดยชาวประมงเมืองพังงามาผสมผสานกับอาหารขึ้นชื่อของร้านจนเป็นสะเต๊ะกุ้งที่ลงตัว เนื้อหวาน สดและกรอบ ที่สำคัญอร่อยยิ่งเมื่อนำมาทานกับน้ำจิ้ม น้ำอาจาด ทานคู่กับขนมปังปิ้งพอนุ่มๆ กรอบๆซักแผ่นลงตัวมากค่ะ รับรอง 10 ไม้…ไม่พอ

After we were satisfied with the savory, we couldn’t resist trying their equally famous dessert, ‘loog Chok in syrup’ and Toddy Palm juice. Loog Chok is a fruit of the palm family which is found only in Phang-Nga. Its flesh is similar to Loog Chid, but softer, and its juice is like Loog Tan (Toddy Palm). The flesh and juice is served in crushed ice which is really delicious, refreshing and original.

นอกจากสะเต๊ะที่สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับทางร้าน ยังมีขนมหวานให้ลองชิมอีกอย่าง……นั่นก็คือ…ลูกชกในน้ำเชื่อม กับน้ำตาลสดแท้จากลูกชก “ลูกชก” เป็นพืชตระกูลปาล์มมีเฉพาะจังหวัดพังงาเท่านั้น เนื้อเหมือนลูกชิดแต่อ่อนนุ่มกว่า น้ำจะเหมือนน้ำลูกตาลกลิ่นหอมหวานอ่อนๆทานกับน้ำแข็งเย็นชื่นใจ. อร่อยแบบนี้เห็นทีต้องให้ลูกชกเป็นขนมหวานในใจ ที่ไม่เหมือนที่ไหนและไม่มีที่ไหนเหมือน

For those who like ‘Chao Guay’ (black jelly), don’t miss the restaurant’s special recipe of Chao Guay served in Longan juice. And for health fanatics, we recommend Ginko nuts in Malva Nut juice. Both are guaranteed to be really thirst-quenching.

สำหรับสาวกเฉาก๊วยลองสั่งเฉาก๊วยในน้ำลำใยที่หอมหวานดับร้อนได้ดีเชียว ทานแล้วรับรองสดชื่น หรือจะเป็นของหวานเพื่อสุขภาพก็ต้องสั่ง แปะก๊วยในน้ำลูกสำรอง ที่อร่อยถูกใจหลายๆคน

Before going home, be sure to stop by and get some ‘Nam Prik Makam Goong Siab’ (tamarind chili paste with dehydrated shrimp) and ‘Gaeng Tai Pla’ (fish kidney paste) for those back home.

Khun Tip’s Satay has been a part of Phang-Nga province since 1975. Thanks to their contribution as one of the province’s main attractions, it has drawn in countless visitors from all around.
